Riddle Eleven: The Friendly Ocean

Question: What did the ocean say to the beach?

Hint: This riddle uses a "play on words", also called a "pun", to make a joke. Think about words related to "the ocean" and you can find the answer! After you think about it, look at the bottom of the page for the answer...

Answer: Nothing, it just waved!

Explanation: "Wave" is the word with two meanings. It's another word that can be both a noun and a verb. When we think of the ocean, we think of the big waves (noun) of water that crash onto the sand. But when we think of greetings (what did the ocean say?), we think of a hand gesture - we "wave (verb) our hand" when we greet a friend. Got it?
